Facts About Colombia

A land of incredible diversity

With vast rain forests, sprawling savannas, huge mountains and coastline on two oceans, Colombia is one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. Thanks to its incredible variety of microclimates, it produces a significant volume of premium washed Arabica every month of the year.

One-of-a-kind access to two oceans

Colombia is the only country in South America with ports accessing two oceans. Its Cartagena and Santa Marta ports are on the Atlantic coast, and the port of Buenaventura is on the Pacific side. With its headquarters in Bogota, Volcafe currently holds a market share of around 10 percent of national coffee exports.

Sustainable — and certified

Volcafe has played a pioneering role in sustainability in Colombia and encouraged active participation from farmer associations in all the major commercial seals. Today the group sources Fairtrade, organic, Rainforest Alliance, UTZ Certified and 4C, as well as hard-to-find double-certified coffees such as Fairtrade/organic and UTZ/organic.

Regional spotlight on Santander

The people of Santander have been producing coffee since the 19th century. Today 45,000 hectares of coffee are planted in Santander, and the harvest takes place from October through December. Coffees from Santander are known for their strong body and chocolate and nutty notes.

Regional spotlight on Nariño

In western Colombia, bordering Ecuador and the Pacific Ocean, Nariño is home to more than 33,000 planted hectares of coffee. Nariño harvests its coffee from March to June, after which the beans are dried in the summer sun. Smallholder farmers produce well-balanced coffees with high acidity, medium body and a lingering citric sweetness.

Regional spotlight on Southwest Antioquia

In the mountainous Antioquia, more than 51,000 hectares are dedicated to coffee production. Harvests take place twice a year — from March to June and September to December. And a tropical climate at altitudes of 1,550 to 1,900 meters contributes to a clean, balanced cup with a velvety body.
